Bears urged to lure ‘hottest’ Lions head coaching candidate to replace Matt Eberflus

Thanksgiving has come and gone for the Chicago Bears, but Black Friday definitely has a new meaning this time around.

After their poor clock management led to a 23-20 loss to the rival Detroit Lions on Thursday, the Bears made the long-awaited decision to fire head coach Matt Eberflus. On November 12, Eberflus fired offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, and new OC Thomas Brown will now become interim head coach.

The only question at the time was whether the third-year coach could complete the season, and the embarrassment of the Lions game ultimately brought him down. Chicago now has a solid month to start thinking about who will take the reins next.

It will be an uphill battle to get back into contention in the NFC North, but the only way forward is to find a coach who can get the most out of Caleb Williams.

The answer, ironically, may be the assistant who stood on the opposing sideline on Thursday. Shravan Gannavarapu from FanSided recently called up Chicago hire Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to become their new head coach.

“Johnson’s ability to connect with players to promote growth, confidence and communication will be vital for the Bears’ young roster.” They need a voice of fresh air and modernity,” Gannavarapu said.

“For Caleb Williams, this leadership will provide the stability he needs as he continues to develop into the quarterback the Bears have desperately sought since their inception.”

Johnson, 38, joined the Lions as quality control coach in 2019 before becoming offensive coordinator in 2022. Since then, Detroit is 32-14 in the regular season and 2-1 in the playoffs, going 32-32. a year of postseason victory drought.

Ultimately, the decision is made by Johnson himself. If he believes he can get the best out of Williams, he’ll take the job, regardless of his allegiance to the Lions. He will have to watch the tape for himself and decide whether he believes the young man will become a star.
