Kilmarnock 1-1 Dundee: Bobby Wales comes off the bench to salvage draw at Rugby Park | Football news

Substitute Bobby Wales scored a brilliant equalizer as Kilmarnock drew 1-1 with Dundee in an entertaining encounter at Rugby Park.

After a goalless first half, Lyall Cameron’s confident goal seemed to condemn the hosts to a fourth defeat in a row.

But the young Wales striker fired into the top corner from Kyle Vassell’s strike to equalize with 10 minutes remaining.

Killie looked more likely to win, with Marley Watkins and Danny Armstrong coming close but had to settle for a point.

Dundee had the first opportunity in the fifth minute when Josh Mulligan drove down to the touchline and picked out Jordan McGee, who forced Robbie McCrorie to make a smart stop at his near post.

The visitors started brightly and in the ninth minute the rampant Mulligan came forward again and crossed the ball, but Simon Murray somehow failed to finish it off.

Moments later, the striker did strike, unleashing a vicious shot off the post, but McCrory was up to the task and snatched the ball away.

Killie managed to weather the storm and eventually found his way into the game. They had their first try in the 28th minute when Watkins’ left-footed cross found Bruce Anderson in space, but the striker was unable to direct his header on target.

The home side finished the first half with a narrow lead, with Fraser Murray firing a free-kick straight at McCracken and Vassell seeing his shot saved as the half ended goalless.

Kilmarnock were inches away early in the second half and Watkins broke inside and fired wide of the far post.

McInnes’ side were now in the lead and Mackay-Steven stung McCracken in the palm of his hand with a powerful shot from the edge of the box just before the hour mark.

Mackay-Steven had an even better chance in the 69th minute as he was picked out by center Fraser Murray, but the winger could only fire home from 12 yards.

It was a golden opportunity and the hosts were made to pay two minutes later when Dundee scored against the run of play.

Substitute Oluwaseun Adewumi burst towards the touchline and his deflected shot landed at the feet of Cameron, who showed brilliant composure to kick high into the back of the net.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Vassell, who had dropped back, picked out Wales, who fired the ball into the top corner with virtually his first touch since coming on two minutes earlier to level the scores.

Killie charged forward in search of a winner and they really should have found it in the 85th minute as McCracken denied Watkins through before Armstrong agonizingly fired the rebound wide of goal.

Kilmarnock believed they should have been awarded a penalty in stoppage time when Innes Cameron collided with Dundee defender Billy Koumetio, but referee Ross Hardie waved off the protests.

There was still time for later drama as Wales scored but McCracken ran out to save his poor shot as the upended match ended in a draw.
