Donald Trump threatens 100% tariffs on the nine BRIC countries if they take actions aimed at undermining the US dollar.

President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday threatened 100% tariffs on the nine-nation bloc if they act to undermine the US dollar.

His threat was addressed to the countries of the so-called BRIC alliance, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.

Türkiye, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have applied to become members, and several other countries have expressed interest in joining.

While the U.S. dollar is by far the most used currency in global business and has survived past tests of its supremacy, alliance members and other developing countries say they are fed up with America’s dominance of the global financial system.

Trump, in a Truth Social post, said: “We demand a commitment from these countries that they will not create a new BRICS currency or support any other currency to replace the mighty US dollar or they will face 100% tariffs and “We should expect to say goodbye to sales to the wonderful US economy.”

At the BRIC summit in October, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the United States of “turning the dollar into a weapon” and called it a “big mistake.”

“It’s not us who refuse to use the dollar,” Putin said then. “But if we are not allowed to work, what can we do? We are forced to look for alternatives.”

Russia specifically pushed for the creation of a new payment system that would offer an alternative to the global SWIFT banking message network and allow Moscow to evade Western sanctions and trade with partners.

Trump said there was “no chance” of BRIC replacing the US dollar in global trade and any country that tried to do so “should wave goodbye to America.”
