Almost half of Sydney suburbs have more dogs than children

Sydney is a very dog-friendly city. There are countless parks, beaches And pubs who welcome your fur babies with open arms. This is not to mention Santa paws an event entirely dedicated to a canine Christmas greeting.

As it turns out, Sydneysiders take the term “fur babies” literally. We encountered (man) Baby recession (with birth rates lower than they have been in 18 years) – this, coupled with increased pet registrations, brings us to a city where 16 of Sydney’s 34 councils have more puppies than children under 15 years of age.

Sydney Morning Herald discovered that in the city of Sydney there is more than two dogs for each child. Woollahra and the Inner West are a close second, with about 1.7 dogs per child. In Mosman and the Northern Beaches there are around 1.25 dogs per child, and even Sutherland Shire has a similar figure.

From 2019 to 2023, pet ownership increased by more than 20 per cent in a third of Greater Sydney councils. While we may have calmed down a bit since the pandemic, it seems dog kids are here to stay. Ppeople love their pets.
