Backing Farage as two councilors defect to UK reform | Politics | News

Reform UK has announced that two North Ayrshire councillors, Matthew McLean for Irvine South and Stuart Ferguson for Ardrossan, have officially joined their party.

In a press release Nigel FarageThe party said: “Both councilors are now at the forefront of Reform UK’s mission to restore integrity and results-based governance to Scottish politics.”

It comes after the defection of two Scottish Conservative councilors last month following a letter from Farage to Tory county councilors facing re-election next year in which he urged them to jump ship.

Ferguson, the party’s new spokesman, commented: “Reform UK remains steadfast in its commitment to building a party that truly listens to the people it serves.

“As more people recognize the need for a fresh approach to Scottish politics, Reform UK continues to position itself as the alternative for those seeking genuine, effective leadership. I look forward to continuing to represent my constituents on reform.”

On Friday, councilors from the now Reform UK handed over letters to Scottish Tory leader Cameron Inglis to confirm they were leaving the party.

Inglis told Daily record: “In my opinion it is disappointing because we are losing councillors, and there will be six councilors left in the chamber.

“I believe we are the only party with sound policies on taxes and justice. I think Reforms are more right-wing. We are the only ones who focus on first line services and we have proven this on a budget.

“Reform is a more right-wing party that has no politics in Scotland but is an English National Party and does not represent Scottish values.

Zia Yusuf, the party chairman, said after the defection was announced: “We are very pleased to welcome councilors Stuart Ferguson and Matthew Maclean to reform Britain. Their dedication to their community and unwavering commitment to public service embody the values we stand for.

“This is a clear reminder that Reform UK is the party for those who believe politicians and governments should work for the good of the Scottish people rather than their own interests. We welcome everyone who shares our vision of fairness, accountability and meaningful change for Scotland to join us.”
