MUMBAI: Despite repeated reminders, 152 of the over 900 colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai (MU) have failed to provide required documents to 12,391 students. This delay has hampered the university’s process of issuing hall tickets to these students ahead of their exams.

MU has issued an ultimatum, giving colleges one week to submit required documents and pay tuition fees. Failure to do so will result in the results of affected students being withheld, the university warned.

Every year, thousands of students enroll in undergraduate and graduate programs at MU’s constituent colleges. Among them are students from other states or universities who need to provide migration and transfer certificates. These documents are required to confirm students’ eligibility and until documents are received, their enrollment remains provisional.

MU reported that several colleges have not submitted applications for the academic years 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24. Although students are allowed to take exams to avoid interruption of their studies, their final transcripts cannot be released without the required documentation.

A MU spokesperson said: “We understand there may be delays in receiving migration and transfer certificates. However, students can organize them during the holidays and send them to their colleges. Unfortunately, some colleges have not submitted applications for three years in a row despite repeated reminders.”

MU has set a deadline of February 2024 for colleges to provide detailed information for the last four years. This deadline was later extended until September 30. However, even with the extension, applications for 12,391 students in the 2023-24 academic year and 6,209 students in the 2022-23 academic year remain pending.

“We have repeatedly extended the deadlines, but the colleges have failed to act. Students from these colleges will be considered ‘provisional’ and their results will be withheld until the documents are received,” the official said.
